More details:
The North End Music & Performing Arts Center (NEMPAC) Opera Project, in
collaboration with the Boston Festival Orchestra, presents Gluck’s opera Orfeo ed Euridice
with two performances at the Dante Alighieri Society of Massachusetts in Cambridge in
June. “Gluck's score for Orfeo is incredibly dramatic and texturally vibrant, with melodies
that are so iconic that they are frequently extracted from the opera,” explains conductor
Alyssa Wang. She goes on to say that “coming into this score was such a rewarding
process, not only because the orchestration is wonderfully creative and colorful, but
because the existential themes of love, life, and loss are imbued into every note.”
This production of Orfeo ed Euridice is an intimate, wildly fun, and whimsical production of
Gluck’s beloved opera about courage, grief, and love, set in the 90’s gay club scene.
Remembering that Gay Marriage was not legalized in Massachusetts until 2004, this
iteration of the opera explores the story of these lovers from the female and non-binary
Queer Community, in a place where self-expression and sexuality are unencumbered by
politics or other oppressive ideologies. “Love is love, and our interpretation will highlight
queer love as we journey to the underworld with demi-GODDESS, Orfeo and her wife
Euridice,” explains Stage Director, Brenda Huggins. She goes on to say, “what inspires me
most about Pride as a social justice movement is the celebration of joy, love, community,
and importance of visibility. Queer artists and allies are at the center of our production on
stage and behind the scenes as we set the stage in a 90's gay club. The club is a vital social
scene for queer folks to express their authentic identity to be SEEN, LOVED, and HEAL as
part of a community”
Sponsors for Orfeo ed Euridice include The Lupoli Family Foundation, Eastern Bank, The
COOP, and Rich Vita Law Offices.
